EDITORIAL | Gamers and Ramadan Pre-Dawn Meal (Sahur)

AS RAMADAN, the fasting month for all Muslim in Brunei starts tomorrow, I always look back with fond memories of those pre-dawn Sahur gathering in the living room playing the games.

When I was a kid, my cousin owned an NES. I only vaguely remember some of the games that were available at the time, I remember playing Battle Tank, Yie Ar Kung Fu, Popeye and Mappy probably, it gets hazy the more I think about it.

At that age, sleeping late didn't mean that we're paying it back the morning after, we had the energy to power through the night just to finish a level, compete and do all sorts of stuff on the NES.

Back then, that one stretch of road had three houses with each of our relatives living there. We'd drop by and have sleepovers while playing games and generally just hang out. That grey console was the thing that brought all of us together then.

Those gaming nights were the best for a kid gamer, just playing Battle Tank and creating some really dumb levels while waiting for Sahur to come around. It was one of the ways how we pass the time sans internet era. Of course, as we got older, we learned more about our obligations during the fasting month and the real meaning behind it, but when you were young, it meant that we get to stay up all night and play games with our close relatives.

Every gamer generation has their stories on how they spend their Ramadan nights, so how did you spend your Sahur?

In the meantime, wishing everyone reading this, a blessed Ramadan.
