REVIEW | Captain America and the Avengers (Sega Genesis)
Where art thou Thor?
Avengers is finally hitting the screens in Brunei as well as the rest of the world and to commemorate the event, here's a mini review of the Sega Genesis Classic Captain America and The Avengers that nobody asked for.
As you can tell, the Red Skull is at it again, bringing forth many enemies the Avengers has faced into your 16-bit system.
THe classic arcade beat em up allows you to choose between four Avengers (pre-civil war) as they punch the living shit of every drone that crosses the city streets, ocean, air and space.
When Cap yells "Avengers Assemble" in all of its chiptune glory, you know to heed the call.
The game is littered with all these voice acting, as they try to converse in three to seven words as awkwardly and comically as possible.
The game also host several well known characters from the Marvel universe, whether they are friend or foe, it's always great to see that they made an appearance in the game.
Gameplay wise, this game is pretty old school, taking it's cues from Double Dragon. You are only equipped with the jump and punch buttons. From there you could combine both buttons to perform a special attack specific to a character.
The enemies are unforgiving even on Normal mode, they will decimate you in every way possible. Bosses in each stage requires more fineses to finsh them off and with the lack of health pick-ups available, this can be quite the challenge.
This is an arcade game after all, so playing this game in multiplayer helps to relieve some of that challenge. But not much.
Captain America and The Avengers doesn't really hold water in this day and age, the game requries a lot of button mashing and luck to get through but it does pull a lot of nostalgic factors as they fight a common enemy and not so much with each other. The good ol' days, more action, less drama.
With the amount of special appearance of characters and some of which you get to fight, the game does a lot in fan service, just don't expect a lot of replay value once you're done.
Hit the video to see some of the game play in action and see for yourself if this is worth getting into.
