EDITORIAL | 2020: A YEAR END REVIEW

IT'S BEEN A DIFFICULT year for many of us. Lives, in general, suffered much from the pandemic whether it’s local or overseas, that much is pretty obvious. With the COVID vaccine now available and getting distributed to those most affected, the world is on the road to its eventual recovery, it is definitely a much-needed piece of good news.

Meanwhile, the video game industry continues to thrive despite the dire circumstances, taking advantage of the "new normal" with the many game releases showing off the full potential of current game console and a glimpse of what the future holds.

Notable game releases

The year saw some impressive lineup of excellent games, most notably Animal Crossing New Horizon, Last of Us Part II, Final Fantasy VII Remake, DOOM Eternal, Spider-Man Miles Morales, Assassin's Creed Valhalla, Yakuza: Like a Dragon, Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity, Ghost of Tsushima, Half-Life: Alyx, Among Us, Persona 5 Royal and Hades among others.

Notable headlines

  • Last of Us Part II won Game of the Year at the Game Award along with other accolades.
  • Cyberpunk 2077 finally released after delays and met with heavy criticism due to its unfinished state and various bugs.
  • The Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 were released but buying the system proved to be difficult due to scalpers and shipment delays due to the pandemic.
  • Production of Nintendo’s line of 3DS handheld comes to an end.
  • Tradeshows such as PAX East, Gamescom, Game Award and Tokyo Game Show goes digital and livestreams their event.

Looking Ahead

There’s a lot to be excited about in 2021 with games on offer from next-generation consoles which also begs the question on how long before the current console generation will last? More closer to home, console prices will continue to be a subject of contention due to the current situation as we finally get the official release of the PS5 and XSX in Brunei and maybe who knows, we’ll probably see more of this much rumoured “Nintendo Switch Pro” next year that all other publications are speculating about.

As for games, there’s a good mix of current and next-generation console games are coming next year and here are some of the ones that we are looking forward to Hellblade 2: Senua's Saga for the Xbox Series S & X, Disco Elysium for Xbox One and PS4, Oddworld: Soulstorm, Far Cry 6, Final Fantasy XIV, Hogwarts Legacy, Resident Evil Village and Psychonauts 2.
